Jez riley French
Focusing on sound as material and subject his work involves installation, intuitive composition, scores, film and photography.
He lectures and runs workshops on located sound / field recording as an art form and has expanded the use of extended recording techniques and the role of durational listening. He also works as a microphone builder and curator.
Jez works extensively on long form recordings and developing the concept of photographic scores for listening/performing. His research connects with questions around perception and imposition.
His work has been exhibited or performed at galleries including Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Paradise Air Japan, Spikeersuppa Lydgalleri Oslo.
Key works capture the sound of minerals dissolving, ants consuming fallen fruit, buildings vibrating, teleferica’s interacting with locales, the infrasound of domestic spaces and the resonances of objects in landscapes.

"Listening to place is not fixed. It is unpredictable, that is the point. These works are a trace of my attempts to listen to a river bordered by reed beds and mud banks, tidal defence work, restricted access, private land and its slow movement through landscapes.
Sounds below our hearing range, outside of our attention and normally not available to us are included, therefore listening via headphones or conventional speakers is advised. Intuitive, durational listening, often at micro-levels, is also key to much of my work, hence the slow flow of these pieces, matching that of the Humber."
